MontaVista Software Inc., a company that specializes in developing open-source software solutions for embedded systems, has secured $9 million in funding from leading venture investment firms US Venture Partners and Alloy Ventures. The investment reflects the growing popularity of Linux as a platform for developers of Internet appliances and data and telecommunications infrastructure. MontaVista's Hard Hat Linux is a standard off-the-shelf binary distribution of Linux that focuses on embedded applications, and it is 100% open source and royalty free. The company plans to use the funding to enhance its engineering, support, marketing, and sales capabilities, including developing new tools and improving real-time performance.
