The Open Group has released the source code for Motif, a popular graphical user interface toolkit used on UNIX systems, under a public license. This allows it to be used and distributed on open source operating systems such as Linux and FreeBSD without paying royalties. Supporters of the initiative include Imperial Software Technology, Integrated Computer Solutions, KL Group, and Metro Link. The release is expected to extend the reach of standards-based, professional user interface technology to new free operating system platforms, which will assist in the acceptance of Linux and FreeBSD in the corporate networked application environment.
