The Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) is a new initiative by Hewlett-Packard, Intel, IBM and NEC to provide high-end enterprise hardware to open source developers. The lab will be based near Portland, Oregon and will support existing industry projects that use open source licenses and are established according to the open source development model. The initial projects of the lab are expected to range from tools development to kernel projects that advance the enterprise capabilities of Linux. The OSDL will be governed by an independent board and management structure, with an executive director employed by the lab to implement policy, make funding decisions and work with the open source community to select projects.
