LynuxWorks, Inc., a technology leader in the embedded software solutions market, announced that Transmeta has joined its SynergyWorks alliance programme. This partnership has resulted in the availability of both LynxOS and BlueCat Linux operating systems for the new energy efficient Crusoe Special Embedded (SE) processor from Transmeta. The Crusoe SE is targeting a wide range of x86 embedded applications, including industrial automation, scientific instrumentation, point-of-sale terminals, automotive infotainment, process control and home automation systems. LynxOS offers its users the Linux processing model, POSIX conformance and open, standard application programming interfaces (APIs), and support for sophisticated hardware features of the processors, namely full MMU support. BlueCat Linux completes the offering with an open source alternative for OEMs, whose applications require soft real time performance and benefit from the wealth of advantages that embedded Linux has to offer. The availability of both LynxOS and BlueCat support for the Transmeta Crusoe SE represents a very powerful solution set for a broad range of demanding embedded applications. The Crusoe family of products delivers a unique high performance, energy efficient and passively cooled hardware solution for customers, with complete x86 compatibility. By utilising LynxOS' ABI compatibility with Linux, OEMs can now develop a range of real time performance products across their product line, without the burden of maintaining different versions of their applications. Their Linux applications can run unchanged on either BlueCat or LynxOS, while hosted on the low power, yet high performance Crusoe SE platform.
