Warren has announced the beta2 development release of SimplyMEPIS 6.0.
The ISO image is available for download and test in the mepis 'testing' subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and public mirrors. Beta2 provides an updated 2.6.15.6 kernel based on Ubuntu kernel version 2.6.15-22.33. MEPIS founder Warren Woodford says "Starting with this release, we are providing a full set of commercial-grade MEPIS kernel packages for the 386, 686, and k7 flavors of i386. These kernels are suitable for use with upcoming releases of MEPIS, Ubuntu, and Debian. We hope vendors will contact us, if they are interested in having commercial support for their hardware in these kernels. ", Problems with cups recognizing all-in-one and parallel printers have been handled.
The kernel and system configuration has been tested and verified with Oracle Database 10g Express Edition. Recently there have been important updates to Firefox, OpenOffice, KDE, hp printer support, xorg, and the kernel. Beta2 includes the latest package updates from the Ubuntu Dapper pools on May 3. New MEPIS package updates are available from the MEPIS pool. Warren continues "Thanks to the solid foundation provided by our friends and colleagues who maintain the Ubuntu pools, current users testing SimplyMEPIS 6.0beta2 can do a full update from the pools instead of reinstalling or upgrading from a new CD. ", SimplyMEPIS 6.0 is scheduled for final release around June 1, 2006.
A beta3 may be released approximately May 11. The MEPIS development team will be unavailable the week of May 14, while attending Debconf6 in Oaxtepec, Mexico.
