MySQL AB has announced the formation of a new Telecom sales and business unit to meet the growing demand for its high-availability real-time database solutions in the converging telecom industry. The company also announced the availability of a new version of its MySQL Cluster product, especially designed and certified for use in carrier grade telecom environments, such as network subscriber databases (HLR, HSS) and Service Delivery Platforms (SDP). At last week's 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, many companies spoke of the urgent need for the industry to evolve to centralized subscriber-centric networks that will increase average revenue per user (ARPU) while reducing system cost and complexity. MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition is a real-time, shared-nothing clustered database system that has been specially designed to meet the high availability, scalability and low latency requirements of telecom applications. Based on technology initially developed by Ericsson, MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition is already at the heart of subscriber databases and SDP applications for leading TEMs, including Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia. The new solution can scale better and has higher performance and availability than legacy proprietary technology -- yet costs 90 percent less.
